<< "Musta maa" is an ominous album that synthetically acrobats between the black path of metal and the aristocratic dimension of symphonic music, taking listeners on a journey to explore the Black Earth. Excellent debut album! >> — Anastasia Tetoula/All Time Metal

"Democracy with a gentle, dictatorial touch" - Finnish black metal band Mourniaty released a debut album "Musta maa"

Karulainen wrote "Musta Maa" over a span of several years. During those years demos were discarded, but Karulainen knew a good song when he wrote one. Those songs ended up forming an album that described the mindset of the songwriter: angry, bleak and rough around the edges.

"-Feels like this album has an edge that is far too uncommon on todays music scene", Karulainen states.

Karulainen describes "Musta Maa" as being ”bleak in the right way” and also different in its mid-tempo landscape, where you can hear influences from bands such as Ajattara (FIN), Dimmu Borgir (NO) or Carach Angren (NED). Combining these influences an album was born that looks and sounds exactly like its creator.

"-If something didn’t please me, I’d redo it to my own liking. Even though there is a full band playing on this album, I’d still use my veto-right when needed. These are my songs, after all. I call Mourniaty a ”democracy with a gentle, dictatorial touch”."

BIOGRAPHY:

When you get fed up with Christianity and Paganism starts to arouse your interest, interesting things are often created. Sometimes this process needs an accelerant, which is exactly what happened when Karulainen and Metällinen found themselves to be merged in the same family tree. Now, what else would fresh, Finnish relatives do but make aggressive noises together? This gave an outlet for the music Karulainen had already been writing.

Finnish Mourniaty began its life as a smoldering project already in 2015. It burst into raging fire five years later, when situations in life permitted concentrating on music full-time. When bass player Tenho joined the group in 2022, Mourniaty finally became a real band instead of two men with backing tracks.

Karulainen describes Mourniaty’s music as black metal, which combines mid-tempo grooves and even symphonic arrangements combined with lyrics sung in both Finnish and English, which revolve around themes of Paganism and Anti-Christianity. The debut album, “Musta maa” (Black Earth), was released thru Inverse records on digital platforms and in cd-format in November of 2025. What a perfect soundtrack for the darkest season of the year.

Line-up:
Metällinen - drums
Tenho - bass
Liekkiö - guitar
Karulainen - vocals & guitar
